I've never really understood the objection to the start button, myself. It makes sense, being as it's the place you start doing everything. Even shutting the computer down, which is an action that you do indeed start.
Most MS critics tend to focus on the wrong things.
Relatedly, one of my complaints is with what happens when you click on the date in the systray. It presents you with a handy calendar, but it's actually the control panel to change the time and date, so you have to be careful to hit "cancel" instead of "OK". I've always thought this could have been handled more smoothly.
